\u201cMany women are ready to get started. Will you help us get the right machines?\u201d asks Margaret Elorm Dodzi, founder of Medlorm Fashion in Ghana. In the dusty streets of Kasoa, just outside Accra, the sound of sewing machines can be heard almost all day long. Among rolls of fabric, patterns and colourful African prints, young women are working on clothing, but above all on something much bigger: their own future.<\/p>\n

Margaret has seen first-hand how many young women in her community grow up without real opportunities. \u201cMany girls want to learn and work,\u201d she says. \u201cBut without training, without a network or without money to get started, they remain dependent on others. We want to show that things can be different.\u201d<\/p>\n

A workshop full of opportunities<\/h2>\n

What started as a small fashion business has grown into Medlorm Fashion: a social enterprise where women and young people learn a trade and gain practical experience. Through the Empowerment Through Fashion programme, participants learn fashion design, pattern making, sewing, entrepreneurship and financial skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t just teach women how to make clothes,\u201d says Margaret. \u201cWe help them become independent and build their own income.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what makes this project special. The women do not only learn a trade; they also produce clothing that is sold. From colourful dresses to modern unisex garments with African prints: everything is produced locally, with a focus on quality, sustainability and craftsmanship. The clothing is now finding its way to both local and international markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a woman starts earning her own money, much more changes than just her income,\u201d Margaret explains. \u201cShe gains confidence. She can support her family, make her own choices and inspire others.\u201d<\/p>\n

To provide the training properly, sewing machines are urgently needed. At the moment, there are too few resources for all participants to practise properly and gain experience. That is why Gered Gereedschap wants to support Medlorm Fashion with hand, treadle and electric sewing machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cA good sewing machine really makes a difference here,\u201d says Margaret. \u201cIt allows someone to practise, produce clothing and eventually perhaps even start her own workshop. It gives women the opportunity to build their own future.\u201d With your support, more women in Ghana can learn a trade, earn their own income and work towards an independent life.
