From Tamale he coordinates the various projects of WUDEP, an organisation that has been working since 2004 to improve the living conditions and future prospects of the population in the northern districts of Ghana. “Together with GG, we have been able to offer more than 300 young people a chance for a better future in recent years. ‘BIG STEPS FORWARD TOWARDS IMPROVING EDUCATION’
“I personally experienced the enormous effect of the shipment of tools during my visit to Babungo”, says Wietske Stokvis, chairman of the foundation Stichting Babungo.
“Practical training at secondary vocational schools has greatly improved because of the availability of materials for students to practise with. In fact, there is so much enthusiasm that students are now building their own practical workshops.”

‘ST. THERESA: GROWING NUMBER OF STUDENTS THANKS TO THE TOOLS.’
“Last year around this time we only had a few students, simply because we didn’t have the capacity to accommodate more at the same time. We had such a small amount of tools! Thankfully, things have now changed!” says Musa Lusiola, head of the Carpentry training of St Theresa Youth Polytechnic. The school is located in Kakagema, one of the poorest regions in Kenya and accommodates early school leavers. The number of students is growing.

“NOW WE FINALLY KNOW WHAT QUALITY TOOLS LOOK LIKE”
“Before we received the tools from Gered Gereedschap, we only had few machineries in our garage. Now we know for real what quality tools look like and we learn how to use them as well. This is the enthusiastic response of Aden Ndinguru, trainee car mechanic at the Chipole Vocational Center.

MORE WORK FOR CARPENTERS THANKS TO THE RENTAL WORKSHOP
Quality tools is a job half done, also in Uganda. Therefore Gered Gereedschap started in cooperation with local partners Children’s Sure House a rental workshop in Kampala, Uganda which can be used by many dozens of carpenters. The workshop also offers paid work to 3 people. The workshop makes it possible for self-employed carpenters in Bwaise and its surroundings to earn a good living, support their family and send their children to school.

REFURBISHING TOOLS. ALSO IN UGANDA: WE MAKE IT WORK
In addition to our workshops in the Netherlands, Gered Gereedschap also refurbishes tools in Uganda. This provides jobs to local craftsmen and the refurbished tools are used locally to strengthen vocational training and support entrepreneurship. In Mpigi, the workshop built and equipped with the support of Dutch volunteers from Gered Gereedschap is the result of the cooperation with Children’s Sure House. “Those tools are the basis for everything!”
